Friends of The Deliberate Agrarian
Friends are people who help you along the way. The following people, businesses and organizations have done that for me. I am grateful for their help and I am pleased to acknowledge them here. I hasten to point out that this listing is not all-inclusive and I will be adding to it as time passes.
Rick Saenz at Cumberland Books reviewed part of my book, Writings of a Deliberate Agrarian, and was a great help in that regard. Cumberland Books is also the only bookseller in the world who sells all my agrarian books. Rick has even given me the honor of being a featured author. Rick has a blog called Dry Creek Chronicles.

Carmon Friedrich is a reformed Christian homeschooling mother of ten children who loves books and has an internet book store. Carmon is also a capable editor. I know this because she edited Writings of a Deliberate Agrarian for me. Check out Carmon's weblog where you can find out exactly what a "Prairie Muffin" is.

Scott Terry and his wife Leah are dairy farming homesteaders here in upstate New York, not far from where I live. Scott has a blog called Homesteader Life, which he describes as "A Blog dedicated to berry pickin', chicken pluckin', buck skinin', and building Christian Agrarian Culture." I like that. It was Scott's blog that inspired me to start my own blog. Leah has a blog of her own called Reformed Farmer's Wife.

It was Christina Fuller who first suggested to me that I should write a Deliberate Agrarian book. She and her husband, Brian, are working hard to build a small dairy in Kansas. Check out the Fuller Family Farms website. Christina's weblog, KSmilkmaid, highlights her family's experiences as they move away from the American dream and pursue an agrarian lifestyle – a life of simplicity and purposeful living in pursuit of God's will. By the way, my family has personally sampled cheese and butter made by the Fullers and it's good!

BackHome magazine was the first publication to take my homely little chicken plucker how-to book seriously. I'm grateful to that magazine's editor, Richard Freudenberger, for that. BackHome was also the first bookseller to buy my book and offer it to readers of the magazine. Click here to read BackHome's review of my plucker book (and to see what the first printing copy looked like). Click here to read BackHome's review of my chicken scalder planbook. You can also order the books using those links. Oh, did I mention that I think BackHome is a great hands-on guide to sustainable living?

Anne-marie Belanger, editor of Countryside magazine helped spread the word about the Whizbang Chicken Plucker with a nice article and photo in the magazine and I'll always be grateful for that.
•••
Jean English, editor of the Maine Organic Farmer's & Gardener's quarterly newspaper has kindly reviewed all three of my agrarian books. In 2004 my family journeyed to the MOFGA Common Ground Country Fair in Unity, Maine and we had a wonderful day there.

Mary Jane's Farm is a unique and inspiring rural enterprise. When I sent Mary Jane a letter and a copy of my book, Making Great Garlic Powder, she graciously told her readers about the book in her magazine. You can find it on page 38 of the "Plateful" issue. Thanks Mary Jane!

My plucker planbook made the national news in 2003 when Pulitzer prize winning humor writer, Dave Barry, chose it as the literary selection in his annual Holiday Gift Guide. You can read the review here. Knowing that Dave has millions of readers around the world, I was hoping his endorsement would result in enough sales that we could finally buy the farm of our dreams. Unfortunately, the vast majority of his readers are urbanites who, like Dave, buy their chickens already plucked at the supermarket. Still, it was a fun experience.

The Garlic Store has just about everything related to the subject of garlic, including my
garlic powder book.

I was an avid reader of Mother Earth News back in the early years when John Shuttleworth was the owner/editor. With that in mind, I sent review copies of my chicken plucker planbook to Mother's editors on two occassions. I was hoping to get it mentioned in the magazine, but they were not interested. When I mentioned this to my Yahoo discussion group, WhizbangChickenPluckers, the good folks there flooded Mother's editorial e-mail line with rave Whizbang reviews and that got the magazine's attention. Aram Frangluyan's review of the plucker made it into Mother and now the magazine sells the book. How's that for a great little story!

What better place to sell books about poultry processing than a place that sells chickens. Murray McMurray was the first hatchery to sell my books and they have sold a lot of them. You can buy a copy of the plucker book here and the scalder book here.

Stromberg's is another hatchery that carries my poultry processing books. Click here to find out more.
